When I asked how he’s feeling regarding attending this event with so many talented creatives, Jose smiles, “I am always excited to meet new people, see new work, and at Comic Con, there are always going to be new artists to connect with. I think it’s fun to share our thoughts, our love, and our pain as makeup artists – what we’ve had to go through to get here!”

For this 2022 season, Skellington was determined to emphasize his love for all characters spooky, strange, and if we’re talking about Yzma “a little sassy”. Embodying all three caricatures, he showcased Palpatine from Star Wars, Yzma from The Emperor’s New Groove, and The Penguin – a rendition of Tim Burton’s 1993 version of Batman Returns – with this being the most challenging character recreation he’s done by far.

“I am just gonna be at the show and go for it! If it’s a complete disaster, then I don’t really know what I’m going to do.” He smiles widely and we share a laugh. “We’ll make it work! We’re makeup artists, we do what we have to do, and we adapt!”

Throughout the last month, Jose has been experimenting with varying textures, densities, and materials. To create as much realism as possible for his Penguin cosplay, Jose is utilizing beans, mattress foam, and any other stuffing materials he can get his hands on. For as long as he can remember, Jose has always been certain he’d be immersed in the television and film industry. With dreams of being a renowned filmmaker, he began creatively directing his own home videos with his family, which eventually evolved into the meticulous molding and constructing of Claymation creatures. As time went on Jose’s childlike curiosity guided his dedication to his craft.

When asked of a moment that distinctly sticks out for him, He excitedly retells one of his fondest memories from his childhood – watching the behind-the-scenes construction of Robin Williams body suit in the highly loved and acclaimed Mrs. Doubtfire. “I just remember watching behind-the-scenes of Mrs. Doubtfire and seeing the artists doing makeup tests on Robin Williams and thinking WOW! That is so amazing! It inspired me as a kid to start cosplaying and playing with my own face and my own features. It really made me want to start doing makeup for film and tv!”

From humble beginnings to SFX stardom, Jose has had an undeniably successful eight-year cosplay career. He reiterates his endless gratitude and love for his work, but notes that being an artist certainly doesn’t come without hardship. Jose recalls that at the beginning of the pandemic, he began to notice a decline in his mental health and did his best to keep himself on track creatively. He constructed several tutorials throughout the pandemic – twelve in total – to better keep in touch with his community. The classes included carving out a beautifully painted White Witch to a timelapse costume construction of an intricately designed Krampus and Oogie Boogie.  “I had a lot of anxiety throughout the pandemic. I was staying busy so that my mental health would be okay. I was always creating characters, I am grateful for that time and my art. I wanted to take that opportunity to teach and to connect.”

Being a Mexico native, it comes as no surprise that cultura (culture) has a significant influence in Jose’s work, so, when presented the opportunity to star on Disney’s show Art Attack and collaborate with other international artists he was elated to jump on the opportunity! Based in Argentina and set to release later this year, Jose excitedly notes, “It’s a show where we have challenges, and there’s so many other talented Mexican artists there! None of us win first place on the show, we all just worked together! It was a true dream come true! It’s Disney! It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life!”

With the completion of Art Attack, Jose retells how eye-opening it was to collaborate with fellow gifted creatives and the emotional affluence that comes with a strong community. In fact, when asked what his future aspirations are for himself, he stated that he’s hopeful for the opportunity to open a studio of his own one day, right in the heart of his home – Mexico. Equipped with a full lab, production space, his closest friends, and most importantly, a lot of love.

“I think young Jose would be shocked that even though I have struggled and have had a lot of rejection, in the end I never gave up. I am just so, so grateful. All my mentors, fans, friends, and family. All the support. Home is definitely where the heart is.”

Con SDCC acercándose rápidamente, José ha estado trabajando incansablemente en nuestro laboratorio completando los toques finales a tres miradas intrincadas que está ejecutando este año. A pesar de que estebo nervioso, sus sentimientos son totalmente nostálgico. La Comic-Con Masquerade de San Diego tiene la mayor importancia para él, ya que fue un evento crucial que primero catapultó a José al centro de atención. Regresar a la comunidad después de tres largos años es emocional para él.

Cuando se le pregunta cómo se siente al asistir a este evento con tantos otros artistas talentosos, José sonríe: “Estoy Siempre emocionado de conocer gente nueva, ver nuevos trabajos, y en Comic Con, siempre habrá nuevos artistas para conectar. con. Creo que es divertido compartir nuestros pensamientos, nuestro amor y nuestro dolor como maquilladores, por lo que hemos tenido que pasar para llegar aquí!”.

Para esta temporada de 2022, Skellington estaba decidido a enfatizar su amor por todos los personajes espeluznantes, extraños y, si estamos hablando de Yzma “un poco atrevida”. Encarnando las tres caricaturas, mostró a Palpatine de Guerra de las Galaxias, Yzma de La Locuras del Emperador, y  El Pingüino, de la versión de 1993 de Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, el más desafiante que ha hecho hasta ahora.

“¡Solo voy a estar en el show y lo haré! Si es un completo desastre, entonces realmente no sé qué voy a hacer”. Él sonríe ampliamente y compartimos una risa. “¡Haremos que funcione! Somos maquilladores, hacemos lo que tenemos que hacer y ¡adaptar!”

A lo largo del último mes, José ha estado experimentando con diferentes texturas y materiales. Para crear como tanto realismo como sea posible para su cosplay de Penguin, José está utilizando frijoles, espuma de colchón y cualquier otro material que pueda consigue.

Desde que tiene memoria, José siempre ha estado seguro de que estaría en la industria de la televisión y el cine. Con el sueño de ser un director, comenzó a dirigir creativamente sus propios videos caseros con su familia, que eventualmente evolucionó hacia el meticuloso moldeado y construcción de criaturas de plastilina. A medida que pasaba el tiempo, José la curiosidad infantil guió su dedicación a su oficio.

Cuando se le preguntó acerca de un momento que destaca claramente para él, con entusiasmo vuelve a contar uno de sus mejores recuerdos de su infancia: ver la construcción detrás de escena del traje de cuerpo de Robin Williams en el película Mrs. Doubtfire.

“Solo recuerdo ver el detrás de cámaras de Mrs. Doubtfire y ver a los artistas haciendo pruebas de maquillaje en Robin Williams y pensando ¡GUAU! ¡Eso es tan asombroso! Me inspiró cuando era niño para comenzar a hacer cosplay y hacer maquillaje mi propia cara y mis propias características. Realmente me hizo querer empezar a maquillar para cine y televisión.”

Desde sus humildes comienzos hasta sus éxito en SFX, José ha tenido una carrera de cosplay de ocho años. Él reitera su infinita gratitud y amor por su trabajo, pero señala que ser artista ciertamente no viene sin luchas. José recuerda que al inicio de la pandemia comenzó a notar un deterioro en su salud mental y trato mantenerse en el camino creativo. Construyó varios tutoriales a lo largo de la pandemia -doce en total- para estar mejor en contacto con su comunidad. Las clases incluían una Bruja Blanca bellamente pintada y un construcción de lapso de tiempo de un intrincado diseño de Krampus y Oogie Boogie.

“Tuve mucha ansiedad durante la pandemia. Me mantenía ocupado para que mi salud mental estuviera bien. Era siempre creando personajes, agradezco ese tiempo y mi arte. Quería aprovechar esa oportunidad para enseñar y conectar.”

Siendo nativo de México, no sorprende que la cultura tenga una gran influencia en el trabajo de José, así que, cuando tuvo oportunidad para trabajar el programa Art Attack de Disney y colaborar con otros artistas internacionales. Eufórico de aprovechar la oportunidad!

Basado en Argentina y programado para lanzarse a finales de este año, José comenta con entusiasmo: “Es un programa en el que tenemos desafíos, y ¡Hay tantos otros artistas mexicanos talentosos allí! Ninguno de nosotros gana el primer lugar en el programa, todos solo trabajamos juntos! ¡Fue un verdadero sueño hecho realidad! ¡Es Disney! ¡Fue una de las experiencias más increíbles de mi vida!”

Con la finalización de Art Attack, José vuelve a contar lo revelador que fue colaborar con otros talentos creativos y la riqueza emocional que viene con una comunidad fuerte. De hecho, cuando se le preguntó cuáles eran sus aspiraciones futuras para él mismo, declaró que tiene la esperanza de tener la oportunidad de abrir un estudio propio algún día, justo en el corazón de su hogar – México. Equipado con un laboratorio completo, espacio de producción, sus amigos más cercanos y, lo más importante, mucho amor.

“Creo que el joven José se sorprendería de que a pesar de que he luchado y he tenido mucho rechazo, al final nunca se rindió. Estoy tan, tan agradecida. Todos mis mentores, fans, amigos y familiares. Todo el apoyo. El hogar es definitivamente donde esta el corazon”
